Today President Barack Obama will unveil a new U.S. plan for winning the eight-year war in Afghanistan. There is expected to be a substantial troop increase, while also mapping out a path to bring America’s military involvement in Afghanistan to an end. President Obama has described Afghanistan as the war the United States cannot afford to lose. After months of deliberations, Mr. Obama is set to unveil his strategy for victory in a nationally-televised address at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

President Obama will outline the rough withdrawal plan in a speech to the nation, when he will also announce a rapid six-month deployment of 30,000 extra soldiers. He has also asked Nato allies to send up to 10,000 more combat troops.

The US currently has 68,000 troops in Afghanistan, with foreign forces overall totalling more than 100,000.
